Classes

DANCE CLASSES

Established since 2000 and with a long-standing reputation for excellence, the Townsville Academy of Performing Arts (TAPA) provides a fun but disciplined environment where young people can explore the world of dance.

We offer dance classes in Classical Ballet, Jazz/Modern, Contemporary, Tap, Hip Hop, Acrobatic Dance,  Song & Dance, Highland and Irish dance, from beginner through to advanced major grades. Our qualified and passionate teaching staff are dedicated to providing your child with excellent dance training. At TAPA we encourage our student dancers to do their best in class, so they gain a sense of self-confidence and pride in their bodies where they can accomplish anything through practice.

Additionally we offer foundation classes to pre-schoolers from 2 years of age which are designed to give our youngest dancers confidence, coordination and creativity in a safe, professional environment. These classes instil correct movement practices which greatly assist their progression into formal dance classes when they reach school-age, should they wish to continue dancing.

Our classes are imaginative, creative and most importantly…fun!

Classical Ballet

Ballet is a fantastic way to learn how to move and control your body. It’s often referred to as the foundation of dance, and it’s easy to see why when forms of dance like modern, have grown out of the basics of ballet. It requires commitment and the best results often happen from more than one lesson a week. Practising ballet can help improve posture, promotes graceful movement, is incredibly strengthening and contributes to core strength, while improving flexibility. In our dance classes, students are encouraged to acquire a sound basic technique combined with an understanding of co-ordination and musical interpretation which are the essentials of a pure classical training. It is compulsory for all students studying Classical Ballet to be dedicated to studying the theory of the art, which includes the learning and understanding of ballet terms and steps.

Learning ballet provides the solid foundation to learn most other dance forms.

Jazz/Modern

Jazz dance is fast, fun, upbeat and high energy, paired with toe-tapping music and flashy costumes. It uses the upbeat music to interpret traditional and not-so-traditional movements and incorporates many of the same elements as ballet, including leaps and turns and is a style distinctively used in large scale musicals today such as Fame, Wicked and Grease. With its origins found in the rhythms and movements brought to America by African slaves, it is a continually evolving style of dance that has been greatly influenced by African-American culture.

The students’ work is based on natural movements: walking, running, jumping and skipping, where they are encouraged to adopt an imaginative and rapid response from beginners. Boys’ work has been developed to meet the increasing demand for a modern dance training for boys. This dance style’s fast pace, high level of improvisation, and upbeat music keep it a favourite among students.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance, a genre that developed during the mid-20th century, is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet, where the dancer strives to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Its core is versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet, where the dancer focuses on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor and is usually performed in bare feet.

Today’s contemporary dance is an eclectic mix of styles, with choreographers drawing from ballet, modern, and “post-modern” (structureless) forms of dance. While some contemporary dancers create characters, theatrical events, or stories, others perform entirely new creations as they improvise in their own unique style.

Tap

Apart from being an essential skill for the professional dancer, tap dance is a very easy dance to learn and one of the most enjoyable and rhythmic forms of recreational dance. Tap dance has evolved over the years, but it typically includes specific steps, such as the “shuffle ball change,” the “New Yorkers”, and the “flap”, creating a variation and sound by shifting the bodyweight and using different types of shoes. This vigorous form of dance requires stamina that is great for the cardiovascular system, strengthens the muscles, develops coordination and balance, and even provides mental and social benefits.

Tap dancing classes are extremely entertaining and helps the participants to “burn off” some energy while teaching them a unique form of dance, with most responding well to using their shoes and bodies to act as “drums” enhancing the music they’re dancing to.

Hip Hop

Straight from the Bronx of New York, Hip Hop is one of the most popular forms of music currently, being fun and exciting and can lead to some dynamic dance routines. What’s also special about Hip Hop is that it often spawns its own dances that spread through the culture before hitting the mainstream at full force. Our skilled teachers will teach your child how to “bust a move”, similar to what they see dancers perform in their favourite hip hop and R&B videos.

The dance culture of hip hop has no set rules or movements that need to be followed in order for it to qualify as hip hop; this makes the dance a fun, natural stress reliever…and…may help your child improve their concentration skills even further, a trait that could benefit their education. Our hip hop dance classes are not only fun and exciting to learn, but are also perfect to keep your child active while allowing them to express creativity in their own style.

DRESS REQUIREMENTS

  • TAPA T-shirt or crop or top
  • Black hip hop pants

Acrobatic Dance

Acro Dance is a style of dance that combines the dancer’s technique with precision acrobatic elements. While all dance is physical, this form is particularly athletic and has unique choreography due to its use of acrobatics in a dance environment. Its athletic character, combined with unique choreography, seamlessly blends musicality, emotional expression, lines and extension with acrobatic movements in a dance context.  Acro technique includes balancing, limbering, tumbling and partnering, using flexibility, contortion and strength.

Acro dance classes will not only work to improve your child`s confidence and coordination, but they also have serious strength-building properties as well. You child may not even realise they’re building up muscle, but great upper- and lower-body strength is needed in acro dancing. The acrobatic elements and aerial stunts that are common in routines require performers to not only have the muscle strength to support themselves, but partners too.

Song & Dance

Musical theatre has become one of the most competitive and rapidly developing industries in the performing arts. TAPA’s Song and Dance class is a musical theatre based class, where children can learn to sing songs from their favourite movies or musicals, with a focus on vocal technique and performance confidence, while incorporating dance movements. We work hard towards working together as a class to put together a range of styles of musical theatre, from a piece focused on acting through song, to a full song and dance routine.

With a strong community musical theatre culture, there is opportunity for students to audition for parts in local productions or at school. In our Song & Dance classes, students will learn to:

  • Explore drama concepts
  • Create stories
  • Learn musical theatre concepts
  • Dance routines
  • Create characters
  • Develop confidence
  • Have a lot of fun!

We aim to introduce students to the world of musical theatre in a safe, fun and collaborative learning environment.

TAPA prides itself that the program taught gives students self-confidence, poise, and a fit body and mind both on and off the dance floor. They learn the skill of Irish Dance, while building character, having fun and developing lifelong friendships. We offer a dynamic and challenging learning environment from 6 years of age, where correct technique is emphasised and a love of dance is nurtured.

Preschool/Toddlers

There are so many big benefits that toddlers and preschool children can gain from dance classes.

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
Just as crawling helps babies bind connections between the two hemispheres of the brain, dancing helps young children lay down more neurological pathways to help them with both physical and mental tasks. The programs delivered at TAPA not only teach the young child dance but also music appreciation and rhythm through instrument play and drama.
SOCIAL INTERACTION
There are also the social benefits where dance teaches young children about cooperation and about being part of something that is greater than themselves. Dance develops your child’s spatial awareness — and that includes paying more attention to how others share their space.
CONFIDENCE BUILDING
When we see a young child achieve a milestone (overcomes a life “difficulty”), we usually will be very enthusiastic towards them offering positive reinforcement, by what we say and from our body language. Dance gives your child plenty of similar opportunities to overcome new, fun and challenging experiences, where they can shine, shine, shine! When you dance, you actually have to learn to tell your body to do what you want it to. By teaching dance to young children, we teach persistence and focus — and through that, they learn self-mastery of their physical, emotional, and mental faculties. Dance also releases endorphins. It literally makes your child happier.

OUR DANCE PROGRAMS

TINY TOTS

From the age of three, the children explore music, rhythm and basic dance techniques in both Modern/Jazz and Ballet.

By releasing their natural instinct to dance, co-ordination and body awareness are quickly developed.

With the perfect layering structure between learning techniques and creativity, our little tots engage in class with both dance and vocal work.

READY, SET…DANCE
Ready, Set…Dance, a 60 minute dance experience for 2 – 5 year old boys and girls, is a combo class of jazz, tap, hip hop, singing, music and a whole lot of fun! TAPA is very proud to be the FIRST Townsville dance studio to have offered this fun dance experience, as it is the perfect way to start developing the co-ordination skills that are the basics of dance classes.

The JAZZ component of the class teaches preschoolers important developmental milestones like skipping, cross co-ordination and sequencing. Our MUSIC section has a strong emphasis on counting music, understanding tempo and exploring rhythm where we use musical instruments and parachutes to have fun learning music as a team. SINGING time on the microphone provides the opportunity for our little divas and rock stars to take their turn to sing with their puppets and it’s very rewarding to see some of our shy students gradually gain confidence. We know that the secret to learning TAP is to start early, so there are fun exercises that teach the children how to use their heels, toes and how to shuffle. All these ingredients together create a super hour of fun!

In the words of Dr. Cathie Harrison EdD M.Ed B.Ed (EC) – Early Childhood & Gifted Education consultant:
Ready Set Dance is an innovation program designed specifically to introduce young children to the world of dance. In each class teachers explore aspects of the Ready Set Dance curriculum through playful approaches which are responsive to the curiosity and imagination of young learners. The children respond with active and joyful engagement and participation that enables them to practise and refine the skills and capacities needed for dance. At the same time the children are extended across the various developmental domains of physical, cognitive, language and social development and use learning processes such as attending, remembering and problem solving. Through regular and sustained participation in Ready Set Dance classes children develop positive dispositions to learning such as enthusiasm, independence, concentration, persistence, co-operation and the three Cs of confidence, coordination and creativity. Ready Set Dance offers much to support the play and learning of young children in Australia and beyond.”

Our music has been specifically designed to capture the beauty of classical ballet in a way that engages preschoolers from the first warm up to the final bow.
